Some patients are unable to carry out basic tasks which many of us take for granted. They rely on the skills of the CNA to help them eat and drink, dress themselves, and get in and out of bed if they are able to get some exercise during the day. Some patients require around the clock twenty four hour monitoring which the CNA is responsible for.

The CNA is also responsible for assisting in the medical aspect of life such as surgery preparation by taking their medical history, hooking them up to an IV, and getting them all ready to go into their procedure. Afterwards, they are responsible to ensure that the patient is comfortable in recovery while taking important vital statistics such as blood pressure and changing dressings on incisions or wounds. Behind the scenes they do such tasks like changing the bed sheets and cleaning rooms after a patient has left in order to prepare it for the next patient to enter.

Ultimately, the work load is very high for a CNA and he or she must have the personality to remain very calm in highly stressful situations along with carrying out guidelines when it comes to routine medical procedures. They also must have proper bedside manner to make the patients as comfortable as possible during their time period of required care.
